How to optimise your website for mobiles

Mobile users now take up at least 52.99% of global Internet traffic, this is why it is so important that your website is responsive on mobile as well as desktop. Websites that aren’t optimised on mobile can lose potential clients due to small, unreadable text and longer load times. Longer load times can cause clients to click off of your website much faster, dropping your website ranking on search engines.

Due to the large increase of consumers viewing content via smartphone, Google began ranking sites due to their responsiveness on mobile. When looking at designing a website, you must ensure that it remains responsive and fast loading throughout all platforms.

Mobile first:

 Many developers have opted for a mobile-first approach. This means that designers will build a website based around mobile sizes and responsiveness. If you design a website that is good on smartphone devices, it is easy to translate these to other devices. Due to mobiles having the most limitations (screen size and bandwidth), designing for this size forces you to prioritise content. Mobile first is a content first approach, making your website more user focused. With a smaller amount of space, designers choose content that is the most relevant and interesting in order to fit into these restrictions, paragraph after paragraph of content on mobile can put users off.

Loading time:

Consumers are impatient, they want to click on a site and immediately receive the information they are looking for. If content is taking too long to load, it is likely that users will click off of your site and look for the information elsewhere. When looking at how to minimise your loading time, you must be mindful of the following factors:

  • Server response time
  • The number of redirections
  • Round-trip times

It is also important that you minimise your image load speed, compressing files using formats such as, tiny png and smush. You can also use CSS to improve image load time, this can be done by loading them as background images through CSS and using media queries to hide them conditionally.

Functionality:

 The overall functionality of your website is important on all platforms however, due to there being a smaller screen on mobiles, it can sometimes be harder for users to navigate their way around your site. Similarly to the loading speed, if users cannot find the information they are looking for easily, they will click off of your website. When designing a website to be user friendly, ensure that:

  • It is easy to navigate – the menu must be easy to use with relevant headings
  • Readable content – headings are recognisable and content is easy to read and understand
  • The correct typeface is used – use a typeface that is easy to read
  • Images – images should be relevant and placed in appropriate places
  • Buttons – use buttons to guide readers to the correct pages
  • Contact information is clearly shown

Once you have built a website that you believe to be functional and responsiveness, ask a friend to test it for you. Your site may appear to be functional to you but others may think differently!
