For younger generations, social media is a way of life however, for older generations social media may seem like a confusing, waste of time. Social media, is much more than just a platform to communicate with people, it can be one of the best ways to market your business! Marketing through social platforms is one of the most versatile and cost-effective strategies; it allows you to reach a wider target audience much faster.

What are the social media platforms?
With various social platforms available to you, it can be confusing to know which one to begin with! We would recommend using more than one social media platform to increase your target audience however; it is key to know who your target audience is. Before deciding on which social platforms you wish to use, you must understand your target audience and their traits. Ask yourself these questions:
- What is the rough age group of my audience?
- Are they predominantly male or female?
- What are their interests?
- Are you targeting globally or locally?

Launched in 2004, Facebook became an immediately popular platform to communicate and socialise with people. More recently, people started to see the potential of marketing a business on Facebook. Due to the large amount of users, it still remains a popular platform for both personal and business ventures! Statistics show that 11% of global active users were women between the ages of 18-24. Facebook offers many different paid promotional options to help to reach your desired audience, from boosting a post to receiving more website purchases, Facebook is a must have. In my opinion, every business should have a FB page, due to the diverse age group and promotional help; it is one of the best ways to reach a large audience!
Twitter launched in 2006 and introduced the infamous hashtag. This social platform was popular amongst celebrities and was a great way for people to get into contact with celebs and keep up with the news surrounding them! Recently, Twitter has become a larger platform for marketing; I believe this is due to the power of hash tagging! Hashtags are used to index keywords or topics on twitter, this is the easiest way for people to find topics that they are interested in and can also be a good way for people to recognise your brand. Statistics show that 27% of those aged 30-49 uses Twitter in Great Britain. Similarly to Facebook, Twitter also offers paid promotions, to help receive more traffic to your profile.
LinkedIn, launched in 2003, is a business and employment orientated service. LinkedIn is the best way to network your business online, as well as creating strong business relationships however; I don’t believe this is the best platform to reach everyday people, as it is predominantly businesses. Despite that, it is definitely a great platform to keep up with industry news and establish great relationships with likeminded people! 21% of LinkedIn users are over the age of 65 however, in recent years it is becoming more popular amongst younger people.
One of the newer platforms, launched in 2010, Instagram is a photo and video-sharing social networking platform. In 2012, Facebook paid 1 billion to acquire Instagram! Instagram is a picture and video based platform and is perfect if you have good imagery and products to show off to future clients, it requires little to no text so is great for image-based businesses! This platform has always been hugely populated by younger generations however; older generations are starting to embrace the app. 29% of 18-29 year olds use Instagram and 33% of 30-49 year olds user Instagram.
