5 SEO trends in 2019

Search engines are constantly evolving and it is important to understand how they are developing. Search engines tend to develop in 2 ways; advancement in technologies and user behaviour. So how will they be evolving this year?

  1. Voice Search
  2. Mobile First Indexing
  3. Keyword Research
  4. Secure Sockets Layer
  5. Influencer Marketing

Voice Search

In the last couple of years, we have seen a huge increase in the use of voice search queries. In 2015, 27% of people used Siri, 23% used Microsoft’s Cortana and 19% used Amazon’s Alexa Al at least monthly. This has continued to increase and it is expected that by 2020 50% of all searches will be completed by voice. Voice search has meant that Google has developed new techniques to ensure that they remain user friendly, as voice search is very different from text search.

One of the biggest changes to how we search is the length of the questions asked. For example, if you were looking for new cameras you may type “new cameras 2019” however, if you were using your voice search function it is more likely for you to say “what are the newest cameras in 2019?” Voice search lets us engage in a more natural way of communicating. Businesses will now have to pay attention to how customers speak using voice search. SEO for voice search works harder to understand the user’s intent and explores the questionable answers such as: how, when, where, why?

Mobile First Indexing

Mobile First Indexing is how Google will predominantly use the mobile version of content for ranking and indexing. With mobile first, Google, crawls every website’s mobile webpage to find it’s ranking before doing the same for desktop web pages. Although Google encourages its users to ensure their website is mobile friendly, they remind users that their website must remain desktop friendly or their rankings will suffer!

To prepare for mobile first indexing in 2019 it is to continue to optimise your website for mobile. The number of mobile users is ever growing in fact, in 2018, 52.5% of worldwide online traffic was generated through mobile phones! (Statista, 2018). With this percentage continuously increasing you must ensure your website is fully responsive on both mobile and desktop, however, it is argued that soon the mobile version will be the one that matters most!

Keyword Research

50% of searchers click on the first three search results they get, as well as this, statistics show that 75% of websites never reach the second page of Google! These statistics tell us how important high rankings actually are. It is suggested that this year, keywords will be focusing on intent.

Every keyword or phrase we search could have multiple intents, eg, someone searching “web design” may want to find a local company who offers this service, may want to learn the basics or may want to find the best web design programme. This is why Google’s major goal for 2019 is to learn and understand the intent behind the majority of its searches. Due to these changes, we will see a development in how keyword ranking works.

Secure Sockets Layer

Secure Socket Layer, or more commonly known as SSL, providing secure communication between client and server by allowing mutual authentication. Statistics show that 82% of respondent said that they will leave a website that isn’t’ secure! A website without an SSL certificate will display the text stating ‘Not Secure’ in the URL bar, encouraging users to stay clear from this website. As well as this, Google will now rank you down for the lack of an SSL certificate.

Having an SSL certificate allows you to create a trusted brand amongst consumers and people will feel more liable to use your services. Failing to authenticate your website with this certification can lead to Google ranking you down due to more viewers feeling unsafe and clicking off of your website!

Influencer Marketing

Statistics show that 67% of marketers say influencer marketing helps to reach their target audience. Influencer marketing is well and truly taking off this year, many more businesses are opting for the contribution of blogger and instagrammers to promote their brand. This form of marketing is becoming more popular mainly due to the increase shown in ‘backlinks’. A backlink is created when an external website or social media channel links back to yours. For example, a promoter on Instagram maybe advertising a T-Shirt, if a person were to click a link from this account to the brand’s website, this will be a backlink.

Google is constantly analysing where traffic on your website comes from and a good backlink will rank you higher due to your content becoming more relevant. As well as this, backlinks can help to drive more traffic to your website and therefore, increase your rankings on Google. Using an influencer is becoming the most popular way to achieve successful backlinks, which have a good affect on your overall rankings!
